Labour Party Welcomes Atiku’s Merger Proposal, NNPP Sets Conditions for Support

In response to Atiku Abubakar’s call for opposition parties to unite against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Labour Party (LP) has expressed support for the merger proposal, while the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) conditions its acceptance.

The Labour Party views Atiku’s proposition as a positive step towards challenging what it perceives as a drift towards one-party rule by the APC. In an exclusive interview, the acting National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, emphasized the need for opposition collaboration to safeguard democracy.

However, the NNPP takes a more conditional stance, labeling Atiku’s call as “medicine after death.” The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Yakubu Shendam, asserts that any merger consideration must involve support for former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso to become President in 2027. Shendam states, “We believe that single-handedly Kwankwaso can deliver Nigeria in 2027.”

Despite the opposition’s responses, the ruling APC remains unfazed by Atiku’s plea. Bala Ibrahim, the APC Publicity Director, dismisses any threat, highlighting Atiku’s past legal challenges and asserting that the PDP is inconsequential in the current political landscape.

As political dynamics continue to unfold, Atiku’s call for opposition unity sparks varied reactions, revealing the intricacies and differing perspectives within Nigeria’s political landscape.
