Makinde Set to Declare Presidential Ambition, Unveil PDP-APM Alliance on May 14
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to formally declare his presidential ambition on Thursday, May 14, during a political rally scheduled to hold at Mapo Hall in Ibadan.
The event, titled *“Unity Mega Rally Ibadan 2026,”* is also expected to feature the unveiling of a political alliance involving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), and other coalition-backed candidates aligned with the governor’s political camp.
Sources familiar with the development said preparations for the rally have intensified amid ongoing political realignments within Oyo State and the South-West.
“A coalition structure is already taking shape ahead of 2027, and the rally will signal the direction of that movement,” a source close to the planning committee said on Tuesday.
According to insiders, grassroots mobilisers and political associates loyal to Governor Makinde have increased consultations aimed at building a broader political structure ahead of the next general election cycle.
Another source said the discussions gained momentum following unresolved internal disputes within the PDP at the national level.
“Several stakeholders believe the current situation within the PDP requires new political alignments. That conversation has become more active in recent weeks,” the source said.
Political observers said the moves appear aimed at strengthening Makinde’s support base beyond Oyo State while positioning him more prominently within the national opposition space.
The May 14 rally is expected to attract political stakeholders, youth groups, community leaders and supporters from across the country, particularly those aligned with the governor’s political direction.
Although Makinde has yet to publicly confirm plans to contest the 2027 presidential election, support groups and political allies have continued to urge him to join the race.
“There is increasing pressure from supporters for the governor to take a national role in 2027,” another associate said. “Thursday’s rally is expected to provide more clarity on his next political steps.”
