“He’s Still Our Member”: PDP Distances Jonathan From Viral 2027 Presidential Campaign Posters
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed campaign posters circulating online that portray former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as a candidate of various political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The posters, which have gained attention on social media, feature Jonathan either alone or alongside other political figures as potential running mates.
In a statement released on Friday, the PDP said the materials were misleading and reaffirmed that Jonathan remains a registered member of the party.
The statement was signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working Committee, Ini Ememobong.
According to the PDP, the clarification became necessary amid concerns that attempts could be made to associate the former president with multiple political parties, an action prohibited under Nigeria’s Electoral Act.
“President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is a registered member of the Peoples Democratic Party under the capable leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki,” the statement said.
The party also disclosed that Jonathan personally took part in the PDP’s recent digital membership registration exercise in his ward.
“He duly registered personally in his ward during the recently concluded digital membership registration exercise — a fact he personally confirmed to members of the Interim National Working Committee during a meeting with him yesterday,” the statement added.
The PDP warned that some individuals could attempt to manipulate party membership records by registering prominent politicians in multiple parties without their consent.
It alleged that “mischief makers” may not only circulate fake campaign materials but also attempt to upload the details of Jonathan and other opposition figures into the databases of different political parties.
The party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the public to disregard any such activity.
“We therefore put the public, especially the Independent National Electoral Commission, on notice of this malfeasance and urge them to discountenance any such fraudulent activity,” the statement said.
