JUST IN: Former CBN Governor Emefiele Faces Federal Trial Today for Alleged Economic Sabotage

The Federal Government is poised to initiate proceedings against the ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, today. The charges revolve around alleged economic sabotage-related offences.

Emefiele, whose previous trial attempt was abruptly halted just 24 hours ago, is scheduled to appear before a High Court in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The trial is set to take place before Justice Hamza Muazu, as outlined in a notice obtained by newsmen.

According to the notice, Emefiele will share the dock with Ramalan Yaro. The trial’s agenda is expected to unfold as the former CBN Governor enters a plea of guilty or not guilty.

An anonymous court registrar confirmed the impending court appearance, emphasizing that Emefiele’s plea would be recorded during the morning session. Maxwell Opara, a member of the defence team, corroborated this information, acknowledging that the notice of arraignment had been duly served on the embattled former CBN Governor.

Crucially, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Matthew Burkaa is slated to bring Emefiele before the court. This follows an undertaking he signed, assuring the court of Emefiele’s appearance for trial. The commitment was made when Justice Olukayode Adegbola Adeniyi, of the FCT High Court, granted Emefiele bail.
