Terror Attacks Sweep Kwara, Katsina, Kaduna; Dozens Abducted
Following last weekend’s massacre in Niger State that left more than 40 people dead, armed groups have launched new attacks in Kwara, Katsina, and Kaduna states, abducting numerous residents, including a veteran photojournalist.
In Kwara State, seven people were kidnapped in Adanla community, Ifelodun Local Government Area, after a failed attempt to abduct the traditional ruler, Oba David Oyerinola, and his wife. The victims, members of the same family, include Sikiru, Taye, Idowu, and Faruk Oyerinola, along with two minors. The assailants reportedly demanded a ransom of N300 million for their release.
Prince Oyerinola Olakunle, spokesperson for Adanla community, said the town has been largely deserted following the attack. The traditional ruler and his wife, who escaped, are now in hiding in Ilorin. Residents reported that the kidnappers tracked the monarch to the state capital, demonstrating the persistent threat to his family.
“Seven people were taken into the bush, and a girl who witnessed the abduction was shot and hospitalized,” Olakunle said. He called on the state government to intervene, noting the community remains unsafe.
In Katsina State, coordinated attacks on multiple communities, including Unguwar Barau, Gidan Dan Mai-gizo, and Gidan Hazo in Malumfashi Local Government Area, resulted in numerous abductions. Eyewitnesses reported that heavily armed assailants operated for several hours. Security sources have yet to provide an official casualty count.
The area has seen repeated attacks despite recent local peace agreements. The latest incidents follow a mosque attack in Unguwar Mantau on August 19, 2025, which left at least 32 worshippers dead.
In Kaduna State, veteran photojournalist Malam Umar Usman Iyale was abducted from his home in Danhonu 11, Millenium City, Chikun Local Government Area. Iyale, a retired staff member of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), was reportedly taken after the kidnappers discovered he had no money. Authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to secure his release.
Meanwhile, in Niger State, residents of Ganaru community in Mashegu Local Government Area discovered three roadside Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), potentially preventing another mass casualty incident. Security agencies cordoned off the area, and bomb disposal teams were deployed.
Chief of Army Staff Lt. General Waidi Shaibu affirmed the army’s commitment to eliminating terrorist and bandit activities nationwide, pledging increased troop deployment and operational support.
