Insecurity: How Israel Plans to Assist Nigerian Government in Protecting Christians, Others — Ambassador

Israel has confirmed that its efforts to support security in Nigeria will be carried out in close cooperation with the Nigerian government, focusing on intelligence sharing and partnership rather than unilateral action.

Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, made the remarks in an interview with ARISE News on Monday, explaining that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to confront global Islamist violence includes support for persecuted communities, including Christians in Nigeria, while respecting the country’s sovereignty.

“This is about working with Nigeria as a partner and an ally,” Freeman said. “It is not about working against Nigeria.”

Freeman emphasized that Israel’s interest extends beyond any single group. “Our goal is to work with Nigeria to stop all violence — against Christians, Muslims, and all Nigerians,” he said.

He identified intelligence sharing as the central component of Israel’s support, stressing that Israeli actions will be guided entirely by Nigerian authorities. “There will be no unilateral action. We will follow the direction of the Nigerian government on where and how we can assist,” Freeman said.

Addressing suggestions that Israel’s move could be politically motivated or influenced by evangelical support, Freeman rejected such claims. “Israel protects Christians because it reflects our principles of religious freedom and equality,” he said, noting that Christians in Israel enjoy full freedom of worship, are well-educated, and thrive in society.

On the situation in Gaza, Freeman said Israel’s international support initiatives do not conflict with its regional security concerns. He underlined that lasting peace in 2026 requires the disarmament of Hamas, which he described as a terrorist organization responsible for attacks on both Israelis and Palestinians. Freeman called for the immediate return of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and reaffirmed that Israel has no territorial ambitions in Gaza, pledging to withdraw once US-backed security conditions are met.

He also opposed Turkey’s involvement in any stabilization effort, citing Ankara’s support for Hamas. Despite ongoing challenges, Freeman expressed cautious optimism for the future, saying, “We hope for the disarmament of Hamas, a stabilization force, a better future for Palestinians, and a peaceful life for Israelis.”
