Troops Arrest Suspected IPOB/ESN Member in Imo, Recover Explosive Devices
Troops of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army and the Joint Task Force South-East have arrested a suspected member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during clearance operations in Imo State.
According to an operational report released in Abuja on Monday, the suspect, Onyebuchi Dara, 28, from Etinasa community in Orsu Local Government Area, was apprehended at Ehioma Junction following intelligence linked to previous attacks on security personnel.
The report stated that Dara had previously participated in an amnesty programme but later went into hiding, reportedly over fears of reprisals from a suspected armed group leader identified as “Gentle the Yahoo.”
Military sources said preliminary interrogation linked the suspect to the 2022 killing of two soldiers — retired Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa and Private Gloria Matthew — at Ubaha-Orsu. He remains in custody while investigations continue.
In a related operation along the Akwu-Udah axis, troops discovered five improvised explosive devices in a location described as abandoned for several years.
Explosive ordnance disposal experts neutralised the devices, according to the report, averting possible casualties among security personnel and residents.
Troops also recovered military and vigilante uniforms, boots and other materials believed to have been used for impersonation and operational support by criminal groups.
The Army said ongoing operations in the area are part of efforts to dismantle armed networks and improve security across the South-East.
