“Only 117 Applicants From Anambra”: Nigerian Army Decries Low Recruitment Turnout in South-East

The Nigerian Army has expressed concern over the low number of applications from the South-East in its ongoing recruitment exercise, saying participation from the region remains disproportionately low compared to national figures.

Brigadier General Uche Nnabuihe disclosed this during a sensitisation visit to Awka, Anambra State, where he said only 117 applicants had been recorded from the state out of about 38,000 submissions nationwide as of April 7.

He noted that the figures were recorded before a nationwide awareness drive began, adding that the campaign was intended to increase participation ahead of the May 27 deadline for the 91 Regular Recruits Intake.

“We observed with concern that out of 38,000 applications received nationwide, only 117 came from Anambra as of April 7,” Nnabuihe said. “This engagement is aimed at addressing the gap and encouraging eligible youths to consider the Nigerian Army.”

He added that the Army offers structured career progression and opportunities for national service, urging qualified candidates to apply.

Lt. Col. Ogbemudia Osawe, who was part of the delegation, said the Army had expanded its training facilities, including new institutions in Abakaliki and Osogbo, to accommodate recruits.

Osawe listed welfare provisions available to personnel, including regular salary, specialised military training, healthcare coverage for families, pensions, gratuities, and access to international postings.

Speaking at the event, Permanent Secretary of the Anambra Ministry of Youths, Ifeatu Emodi, attributed low enlistment interest in the region to misinformation and misconceptions about military service, while supporting the outreach initiative.

Traditional ruler Igwe Michael Okeke-Uche of Enugwu-Agidi also encouraged youth participation, describing military service as an opportunity for broader regional representation.

The sensitisation programme took place at the Ministry of Youths in Awka and drew participants from various youth groups across the state, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
