Troops Discover Suspected Graves of Slain Army Couple in IPOB/ESN Enclave in Imo — Nigerian Army

Troops of the Nigerian Army have uncovered shallow graves in Imo State believed to contain the remains of two military personnel abducted and killed in 2022.

The discovery was made on April 24 during a clearance operation targeting a camp linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), along the Ubaha-Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area, according to a statement issued by the army on Saturday.

The military said the remains are suspected to be those of retired Master Warrant Officer Audu Linus and Private Gloria Matthew, who were reportedly kidnapped and killed in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.

According to the statement, the graves were found during an intelligence-led operation carried out by troops of the 82 Division in collaboration with other security agencies to dismantle suspected IPOB/ESN hideouts in the area.

The army said troops encountered resistance as they advanced toward the camp but repelled multiple ambushes and secured the enclave.

After clearing the camp, soldiers conducted a search that led to the discovery of the shallow graves. The remains have since been recovered and secured for forensic examination, including DNA testing, to establish their identities.

The military said it is working with the families of the deceased to support the identification process and make burial arrangements once confirmation is completed.

The army described the operation as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt armed groups operating in the South-East and pursue accountability for attacks on security personnel.

It also urged residents to share credible information with security agencies, while reaffirming its commitment to restoring security in the region.
