PDP Fumes Over Canadian Court’s Terror Tag, Issues Response
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned a Canadian court ruling that classified Nigeria’s two leading political parties—the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)—as terrorist organizations.
Describing the verdict as “misinformed, biased, and lacking evidence,” the PDP urged its outright dismissal.
The Federal Court of Canada upheld a decision by the Immigration Appeal Division to deny asylum to Douglas Egharevba, a former member of both parties, citing alleged involvement in political violence, subversion of democracy, and electoral bloodshed. The ruling referenced the PDP’s conduct in the 2003 state and 2004 local elections, including ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, and attacks on opposition supporters.
PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor rejected the classification, insisting there is “nothing to show” that the PDP or even the “malfunctioning APC” meets the definition of a terrorist group. “If there are concerns about individuals tied to terrorism, they should be addressed individually—not by labeling entire political parties,” he said.
Former NNPC communications officer Olufemi Soneye warned the ruling could have far-reaching consequences, including increased scrutiny and visa denials for Nigerians abroad. He called it a dangerous precedent that could undermine democracy and be used to silence opposition.
The PDP called on democratic nations to focus on individual accountability rather than sweeping accusations that could erode civil liberties and political participation.
