Labour Party Attacks Obi for Backing ADC Candidates in By-elections
The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has criticised the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his call for supporters to back African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidates in the upcoming by-elections.
In a statement personally signed on Friday, LP National Chairman Julius Abure accused Obi of engaging in political inconsistency, describing him as an “Uber politician” who avoids taking firm positions.
“It is unfortunate that Obi has turned himself into an irony and a paradox in the Nigerian political space,” Abure said. “He has become an ‘Uber politician,’ unwilling to take a position and stand by his decision.”
Abure further alleged that Obi has maintained affiliations with multiple political parties simultaneously, calling it a desperate bid to lead Nigeria. He accused the former Anambra governor of “crying wolf where there is none” and elevating political subterfuge.
The remarks come after Obi urged his supporters to vote for ADC candidates in the August 16 by-elections, which will be held in several states. The directive marks a notable departure from LP’s official stance, deepening existing tensions within the party.
The by-elections are expected to fill vacant legislative seats across the country, with multiple parties jostling for control in key constituencies.
