Nine Nigerian Soldiers Killed in Boko Haram Bomb Attack in Borno
At least nine Nigerian soldiers have been killed and several others injured after improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by Boko Haram detonated near Gubio in Borno State, military sources confirmed to SaharaReporters on Monday.
According to the source, the soldiers were traveling from Maiduguri when they stopped at a roadside camp to rest before continuing their journey on Sunday. The explosives, which were not part of a direct ambush, detonated at the site, causing multiple casualties.
“Eight died yesterday among those who were injured, and one more passed away this morning,” the source said, adding that many of the soldiers sustained serious injuries. The affected personnel were from the 145 Damasak unit under the 5 Brigade in Maiduguri.
Photographs and video published by Sahara Reporters show the aftermath of the explosion, including soldiers with injuries consistent with powerful blasts. Several bodies displayed severe trauma, including severed limbs, indicating the intensity of the detonation.
The attack is the latest in a continuing series of assaults targeting military formations and patrols in Nigeria’s North-East. Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have repeatedly used explosives and coordinated strikes against troops in the region.
The Nigerian Army has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
In a similar attack in November 2025, suspected ISWAP fighters ambushed a military convoy, killing several soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and abducting a serving Brigade Commander.
