Governor Otti Names Abia’s First Six-Lane Road After Aguiyi-Ironsi

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has dedicated the state’s first six-lane road to the memory of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, the late Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi. The announcement was made during the inauguration ceremony held on Wednesday in Umuahia, the state capital.

The newly reconstructed Abia Tower-Ossah Road, now expanded from four to six lanes, spans 3.5 kilometers and ends at Okpara Square. This significant infrastructure project was unveiled by Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (rtd), former Chief of General Staff under General Ibrahim Babangida’s military regime.

Governor Otti, in his speech titled “The Future,” emphasized that the road project was initiated to enhance the city’s aesthetics, improve security, facilitate traffic flow, and boost economic activity. He expressed gratitude to the local communities for their support and cooperation, which were crucial for the project’s timely completion.

“Before the groundbreaking ceremony, we ensured that over 175 property owners affected by the expansion were fully compensated,” Governor Otti stated, highlighting the administration’s commitment to fairness and thoroughness.

In related remarks, Eli Adam, General Manager of the construction firm overseeing the project, noted Governor Otti’s dedication to the project’s importance for the state and its people. “We made every effort to meet the project’s deadlines and uphold the highest standards,” Adam added.

Commissioner for Works, Otumchere Oti, acknowledged the challenges faced, including the removal of over 400 structures. He thanked Governor Otti for his decisive action and the construction firm for their quality workmanship. He also highlighted the installation of solar-powered lights and detailed road maps as part of the road’s new features.

The event also marked the inauguration of the Okpara Square Water Fountain and the commencement of the Umuahia Public Transport Terminal project, further underscoring the administration’s commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and services in Abia State.
