Nigerian-American Doctor Dies During Abia Free Medical Outreach

A United States–based Nigerian physician, Dr. Uzoma Nwaubani, has died after experiencing a sudden medical emergency while taking part in a free healthcare outreach in Abia State.

The incident happened during a five-day medical mission held from April 13 to April 17, 2026. The programme was jointly organised by the Abia State Government and the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA), with the goal of providing healthcare services to underserved communities.

Dr. Nwaubani was part of the visiting medical team that travelled to Nigeria for the outreach. She arrived with her family, including her husband and daughter, who is a final-year medical student in the United States.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti said she developed a sudden health complication while the programme was ongoing and was quickly taken to a medical facility for treatment.

Medical personnel from ANPA and local health workers reportedly worked together to stabilise her condition, but she did not survive.

Governor Otti confirmed that the state government has reached out to her family and is making arrangements to support them. He also noted her involvement in the outreach as part of the visiting medical team from the diaspora community.
