Army intercepts IEDs, averts attack in Abia forest
The Nigerian Army says it has disrupted a planned bomb attack after discovering and safely neutralising multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Umuchima Forest, located in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State.
The operation took place in the early hours of Friday, April 3, 2026, following intelligence gathered by a brigade unit, which prompted a targeted military deployment to the area.
In a statement, Captain Muyiwa Ayara, speaking on behalf of the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 14 Brigade in Ohafia, said troops of the 145 Battalion (Rear) carried out a clearance and combat patrol based on analysed intelligence.
According to the army, four IEDs were found at key points within the forest. The devices were believed to have been positioned to limit troop movement and secure locations used by suspected armed groups.
“The explosives were part of an effort to restrict troop operations and protect criminal hideouts in the area,” the statement said.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams from the 14 Brigade were deployed to the scene. The devices were detonated safely, while components were retrieved for forensic examination.
Military authorities said the recovered materials would aid ongoing investigations and provide insight into the methods used by the suspected group.
Troops have since expanded operations in the area, focusing on removing remaining threats, disrupting supply networks, and weakening the activities of suspected IPOB/ESN elements in the forest and nearby communities.
The army assured residents of continued security presence and called on the public to share credible information with security agencies.
