Ebonyi PDP Rejects New Caretaker Committee List

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has vehemently rejected the newly constituted caretaker committee announced by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). This development has sparked significant discontent among the local party members, who have threatened to resign en masse if their demands are not met.

In a statement released on Friday, signed by 71 party members and stakeholders, the Ebonyi PDP expressed their disapproval of the NWC’s decision. The statement emphasized that the party members had initially been asked to nominate candidates from each of the state’s 13 local government areas to form the new caretaker committee. The NWC had assured them that it retained the right to appoint the chairman and secretary from anywhere in the Southeast region.

However, the release of the new caretaker committee list showed a departure from the nominations submitted by the Ebonyi stakeholders. This move has been perceived as a betrayal and a deliberate attempt to undermine the party’s stability in the state.

“The NWC’s actions suggest they are either orchestrating the demise of the PDP in Ebonyi State or being influenced by adversaries of the party,” the statement read. The aggrieved members made it clear that unless the NWC honors the originally agreed-upon list, they might have no choice but to resign from the party.

Among those who signed the statement are notable figures such as Senator Paulinus Igwe Nwagu, the PDP’s deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 elections; Senator Michael Amah Nnachi; Barrister Onwe S. Onwe, former acting national secretary of the PDP; business mogul Chief Julius Amah; and Dr. Paul Okorie, a former governorship aspirant. Other signatories include Hon Chris Usulor, Hon Franca Okpo, Hon Victor Aleke, Chief John Igboke, Chief Ekuma Igbota, Chief Amah Ugo Orji, and Chief Abia Onyike, among others.
