Video: “In Hindsight, Bola Tinubu Was the Best Candidate in the 2023 Presidential Race,” Says Former Peter Obi Campaign DG Okupe
In a recent interview, former presidential aide Doyin Okupe praised President Bola Tinubu, calling him the best candidate among those who contested in the 2023 presidential election.
Tinubu secured victory in the 2023 election, with Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party finishing second and third, respectively.
Okupe, initially a campaign director for Peter Obi, stated that with the benefit of hindsight, he now believes Tinubu is the ideal person for the presidency. “Of all the people who ran for president in 2023, by the benefit of hindsight, Bola Tinubu is the best,” Okupe remarked during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.
Okupe explained that his support for Obi stemmed from their shared belief that a Southerner should become president, which motivated their departure from the PDP. Despite his earlier role in Obi’s campaign, Okupe expressed that Tinubu stands out in terms of capability, commitment, and knowledge.
Reflecting on the challenges facing the Tinubu administration, Okupe emphasized that Tinubu inherited a nation that had seemingly been neglected for eight years. He urged Nigerians to give Tinubu more time before passing judgment on his administration.
Okupe also addressed potential perceptions of betrayal to Obi, clarifying that his current stance is based on an objective assessment of all candidates. He noted that his previous resignation from Obi’s campaign was to prevent his personal issues from distracting the campaign, following a court ruling that found him guilty of receiving over N200 million from former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki.
