Why We Aborted Obi’s Lecture — OAU Management
The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has explained the circumstances that led to the cancellation of a proposed lecture involving former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stating that the decision was driven by procedural gaps and security concerns rather than any form of disregard.
In a statement released on Sunday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution clarified that it only became formally aware of the invitation and the status of the guest a day before the scheduled event.
According to the statement, a student group had invited Obi to speak on campus, but the required administrative notification and approvals were not completed within the expected timeline.
“The university authorities were not duly informed of the status and calibre of the invited guest until Friday, just a day before the scheduled programme,” the statement read.
The management stressed that events featuring high-profile personalities require advance notice to allow for proper coordination, especially in areas of logistics and security planning. It noted that such processes typically involve collaboration with security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.
According to the university, these arrangements are essential to ensure the safety of guests, students, staff, and other attendees.
The statement further confirmed that due to the late notification, the institution was unable to complete the necessary preparations and therefore did not approve the use of Oduduwa Hall for the event.
It added that the decision should not be interpreted as a lack of respect for Obi, noting that the university holds him in high regard as a public figure.
Vice-Chancellor Adebayo Simeon Bamire reiterated that the institution remains open to hosting distinguished individuals, provided due process is followed.
He also urged students and staff to adhere strictly to established procedures when organising events within the university community.
