NDC Courts Obi and Kwankwaso as Party Deadline Nears for 2027 Ticket
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has reached out to Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, both prominent figures in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging them to consider joining its platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a post on X on Sunday, the party signaled interest in securing both politicians for its presidential race, noting a narrow window before the nomination deadline.
“All we need right now. Just all we need. 2 weeks to deadline,” the party stated, alongside a photo showing Obi and Kwankwaso shaking hands, captioned: “Nigeria will be OK.”
The message comes as political discussions intensify around possible alliances ahead of the election cycle. Supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso recently launched the “OK Movement,” aimed at mobilising backing for a potential joint ticket. The group has since begun setting up leadership structures at national and sub-national levels.
Within the ADC, internal disputes continue to affect party stability. The party is currently facing a leadership tussle, with a case involving its national structure still pending at the Supreme Court, which recently reserved judgment on an appeal tied to the dispute.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set May 30, 2026, as the deadline for political parties to submit membership registers and finalize candidate nominations for the 2027 elections.
However, opposition parties, including the ADC, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), have called for an extension of the primary election timeline to the end of July. They argue that the current schedule places them at a disadvantage in preparing for the polls.
