Abia State Government Lifts Restriction on Tricycle, Motorcycle Operations
The Abia State Government has announced the postponement of its planned restriction on the operation of tricycles and motorcycles within the state. Initially scheduled to commence today, July 1, 2024, the restriction, which would have limited operations between 7:00 pm and 6:00 am, will now take effect from August 1, 2024.
This decision was disclosed by the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, citing public appeals as the reason for the postponement. The government had previously set July 1 as the commencement date for the restriction but adjusted its timeline to allow residents more time to prepare for the policy’s implementation.
The Commissioner’s statement emphasized the importance of the ongoing enumeration and registration of all commercial vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles across Abia State. This registration process will proceed as planned starting today.
“We have taken into consideration the numerous pleas from Abians for additional time to adequately prepare for the enforcement of this policy,” the statement read.
The decision to lift the restriction, albeit temporarily, signals the government’s responsiveness to public feedback and its commitment to ensuring a smooth transition towards regulated transportation operations in the state.
