YABATECH Student Dies in Lagos Military Operation
Balogun Sultan, a National Diploma II student at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), has died after being struck by gunfire during a military operation in Lagos.
Sultan, enrolled in the college’s distance learning program, was reportedly returning home following an examination when the incident occurred.
According to classmates, Sultan had completed a Research Methods assignment and was taking his usual route from the WAEC bus stop to Lagos Island, where he lived.
Eyewitnesses said soldiers were deployed to contain a reported cult clash in the area. Sultan was allegedly hit by stray bullets during the operation. Residents at the scene attempted first aid, applying pressure to his wounds, and rushed him to the Military Hospital in Yaba. Despite emergency surgery, he did not survive.
Classmates described Sultan as a focused and respectful student who kept to himself and avoided trouble. Many expressed shock at his sudden death, noting the loss of a promising young life.
The incident has left the YABATECH campus in mourning, with students struggling to process the tragedy that occurred on what was meant to be a routine day.
