Why PDP National Convention May Not Hold – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has raised concerns over the scheduled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention, saying it may not hold if ongoing internal crises are not resolved.

The PDP had planned to hold its convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, this November. However, Wike warned on Monday during his monthly media briefing that unresolved issues within the party could derail the event.

“The issue of the National convention is not the problem; the issue is the problems leading to the convention,” Wike said.

He added that while the venue is not in dispute, crucial matters leading up to the convention must be addressed. “PDP has agreed to set up a committee for the Southeast and Ebonyi. Our team is meeting tonight, and you will hear from us. We are not contesting the venue of the convention; we are saying that if the necessary preparations are not done, there is a likelihood that the convention will not hold,” he explained.

Wike also criticized media reports suggesting personal disagreements influenced his comments. “The venue is not the subject matter. The subject matter is whether the party has done what is required before holding the convention. I did not say Ibadan will not host the convention—that is not correct.”

The minister reminded that PDP has previously held conventions in different locations, including Port Harcourt and Abuja, emphasizing that the focus should be on resolving internal disputes first. “If the issues are resolved to the satisfaction of the concerned parties, there will be no problem. But if not, appropriate action may be necessary,” he said.
