WAEC Dismisses Claim of Abia State as Best-Performing in 2023 WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a formal disclaimer refuting a recent report that declared Abia State as the top-performing state in the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in Nigeria. This declaration came in a statement released on Thursday by WAEC’s Public Affairs Department, signed by Moyosola Adesina, the Acting Head of Public Affairs, as the council firmly distanced itself from the assertion, deeming it completely untrue.

In the strongly worded disclaimer, WAEC sternly cautioned against believing and circulating this misleading information. The council emphasized that it does not engage in ranking states based on their performance in its examinations, a fact that has been consistently affirmed in the past.

The statement also shed light on the questionable origins of this misinformation, identifying it as a ploy by certain platforms that thrive on creating controversies. These platforms were accused of making futile attempts to embroil the council in political disputes and tarnish its reputable image. WAEC expressed concerns that this disinformation might be intended to sow discord among states vying for educational superiority.

The statement reads, “The attention of the West African Examinations Council has been drawn to a social media post stating that Abia State has been rated as the best-performing state in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2023, in Nigeria. This is far from the truth. The Council completely and totally disassociates itself from the publication.”

The statement continued, “For the avoidance of doubt, The West African Examinations Council DOES NOT RANK the PERFORMANCE of states in its examination. This we have always stated. Thus, any media circulating this wrong information should be disregarded. They are mischievous platforms that trend on controversies, and their intention is purely political. They are trying unsuccessfully to drag the Council into the political arena and bring its good name to disrepute with the intention to cause disharmony among the states competing for superiority!”

Furthermore, WAEC clarified that it has not made any determination regarding the best candidate(s) in the 2023 WASSCE for School Candidates. Any reports suggesting otherwise were deemed false and should be dismissed.

The general public was urged to take note of this clarification to avoid being misled by inaccurate information regarding the recent WASSCE results.
