Video: Bandit Kingpin Bello Turji Captures Nigerian Army Vehicles, Ammunition
Videos have emerged online showing bandit leader Bello Turji and his gang celebrating their recent capture of a Nigerian Army Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC). The footage also reveals the gang boasting about their acquisition of a significant cache of ammunition from the army.
This incident was confirmed by ZagaZola Makama, a counterinsurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region. Makama reported that a distress call alerted troops to a high-level bandit meeting within Turji’s camp. A response team, led by a young officer, was dispatched but faced difficulties as their vehicle became mired in marshy terrain, hampering their progress.
Makama detailed that the troops came under heavy fire from the bandits, leading to hours of intense gunfighting. Adverse weather conditions, including heavy rain, delayed air support, allowing the bandits to fortify their position. Efforts to extricate the stuck vehicles with another MRAP failed, and additional reinforcements arrived too late to prevent the loss.
The troops eventually withdrew from the scene, leaving behind their vehicles. Although no fatalities were reported, the bandits later appeared publicly, celebrating their victory and displaying the captured equipment.
The Nigerian Army has yet to officially confirm the details of the incident.
