Updated: Veteran Nollywood Actor Mr. Ibu Dies from Cardiac Arrest

Renowned Nigerian actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has passed away at the age of 62, succumbing to a cardiac arrest. The sad news was officially confirmed by Emeka Rollas, the president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), through an Instagram post on Saturday evening.

Don Nwuzor, Mr Ibu’s long-time manager, conveyed the heartbreaking details, stating, “Mr Ibu suffered cardiac arrest according to his manager for 24 years Mr Don Single Nwuzor.”

The iconic actor, known for his comedic roles, had battled a life-threatening illness, revealing his condition in October of the previous year. Facing financial difficulties, Mr Ibu sought assistance, prompting an outpouring of support on social media.

Among the contributors, the Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Foundation stepped forward, announcing that it had covered “ALL medical expenses” for Mr Ibu. The actor’s health had taken a severe turn, leading to the amputation of his leg after undergoing seven surgeries. Despite his resilience, Mr Ibu remained hospitalized until January when he returned home after months of treatment.

John Okafor entered the acting scene in the early 2000s, gaining widespread recognition for his role in the 2004 movie ‘Mr Ibu.’ His comedic talent extended to various films, including ‘Coffin Producers,’ ‘Husband Suppliers,’ ‘International Players,’ ‘Mr. Ibu in London,’ and ‘Police Recruit.’ Throughout his career, Mr Ibu earned numerous nominations and awards for his outstanding contributions to the Nigerian film industry. May his soul rest in peace.
