Mr. Ibu’s Son, Daughter Apprehended for N55 Million Fraud in Father’s Medical Fund

The Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCID), Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos State, has apprehended Oyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu over allegations of conspiring and defrauding Mr. John Ikechukwu Okafor, widely known as Mr. Ibu, of a staggering N55 million.

The FCID’s press release on Thursday revealed that the arrest stemmed from a petition filed by Diamond Waves Law on behalf of Mr. Ibu’s wife, Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor. The petition accused Mr. Ibu’s two sons, Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Valentine Okafor, along with adopted daughter Jasmine, of orchestrating a scheme to defraud the actor while he was undergoing medical treatment.

According to the police statement, the investigation exposed a plot where the accused duo manipulated Mrs. Stella Maris Chinyere Okafor, took control of Mr. Ibu’s phone, and accessed his banking details. Subsequently, they reinstalled the mobile banking applications, wiping off the original ones, and transferred N55 million from the public fundraising account dedicated to Mr. Ibu’s medical bills.

The FCID spokesperson, ASP Mayegun Aminat, explained how the suspects, after wiping off the original banking applications, transferred funds to Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor’s personal bank. The fraudulent activities were further corroborated by WhatsApp messages detailing the criminal plans. Additionally, it was revealed that the accused had a sham marriage at Ikoyi registry and had applied for UK visas with intentions to flee the country.

The statement disclosed that a total of N50 million has been recovered from the suspects. Both Onyeabuchi Daniel Okafor and Jasmine Chioma Okekeagwu have been charged with conspiracy and stealing at the Chief Magistrate Court 1, Yaba, in Charge No. A/06/2024. They were granted bail in the sum of N15 million with two sureties each, and the case has been adjourned to March 11, 2024. The case file has been forwarded to the Office of Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.
