Unknown Attackers Burn Down Catholic Church, Priest’s Vehicles in Cross River
St Mary Quasi Parish Catholic Church in Katchuan Irruan, Boki Local Government Area, was set on fire in the early hours of Thursday, leaving residents in shock.
According to church officials, unidentified individuals gained access to the church around 3 a.m., setting fire to the Sacrament area. Sacred items and sections of the altar were reportedly destroyed in the blaze. Vehicles belonging to the parish priest, including a Lexus RX 350 and a Toyota Corolla, were also burned on the church grounds.
Emergency responders were alerted promptly, and efforts were made to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.
The Cross River State Police confirmed the incident, saying a manhunt is underway. Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata stated that the church’s sacristy records were also destroyed. No arrests have been made, and the case has been transferred to Okundi Police Station for investigation. Authorities promised updates as inquiries continue.
