Cross River Assembly Suspends Lawmaker Over Alleged Assault on Wife
The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended the lawmaker representing Obubra I State Constituency, Dickson Agbor, indefinitely over allegations that he assaulted his wife.
The decision was taken during plenary on Thursday after a motion was moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo.
According to journalist Agba Jalingo, the incident occurred on Saturday, February 28, 2028, at the Assembly quarters. Agbor was alleged to have assaulted his wife following accusations of infidelity.
While presenting the motion, Etta condemned the reported conduct, describing it as inappropriate for a public official and inconsistent with the standards expected of members of the legislature.
He said the Assembly had a responsibility to protect the credibility of the institution and ensure that its members maintain acceptable conduct.
Following deliberations, the House resolved to suspend Agbor from all legislative activities pending the outcome of an investigation.
The Assembly also approved the formation of an ad hoc committee to examine the allegations and present its findings for further action.
After the resolution was adopted, Agbor was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms.
Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, said the Assembly remained committed to maintaining discipline and protecting the reputation of the legislature. He noted that lawmakers are expected to act in ways that reflect the trust placed in them by the public.
According to the Assembly, the suspension will remain in effect until the investigative committee concludes its work and reports back to the House.
Earlier, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu and his wife, Eyoanwan Otu, criticised the alleged incident, describing the lawmaker’s actions as irresponsible.
However, Agbor’s wife, Glory Agbor, later appealed for privacy and said the issue had been resolved within the family.
In a statement on Thursday, she said the situation had been misunderstood and insisted that she and her husband were at peace.
Glory Agbor also apologised to her husband and family and announced that she had withdrawn from the Legislators’ Wives Association.
