MURIC Calls on National Assembly to Remove INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, Cites Reasons

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has escalated its call for the removal of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Joash Amupitan (SAN) to the National Assembly.

The group cites Amupitan’s alleged involvement in preparing an 80-page legal brief on Christian genocide, which it claims was later used by the United States to indict Nigeria. MURIC’s position was outlined in a statement on Wednesday by its founder and executive director, Ishaq Akintola.

“Three months after Islamic organisations first demanded the removal of Prof Joash Amupitan, there has been no action,” the statement said, adding that the Presidency has largely ignored complaints from Muslim groups.

MURIC criticized what it described as selective responsiveness from the government, noting the contrast in how quickly it addresses the demands of small terrorist groups compared to those of peace-oriented Islamic organisations.

The organisation also questioned Amupitan’s neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that his alleged anti-Muslim bias could influence electoral outcomes.

“Amupitan cannot serve as an impartial referee in elections where his word is final,” the statement said, warning that his perceived prejudice may become a central issue in election disputes.

Frustrated by the Presidency’s silence, MURIC said it is now seeking intervention from the National Assembly. “It is not about religion; it is about the fanatical and vicious approach adopted by him towards Nigerian Muslims,” the group said.

The statement called on lawmakers to examine the complaints, emphasizing that repeated calls for Amupitan’s removal are already part of the public record. MURIC also suggested a replacement it considers neutral, noting that many Christians have previously served in the role without raising concerns.

The organisation concluded by reiterating its demand: “Amupitan must go. Our cause is just. No retreat, no surrender.”
