Suspended Abia Commissioner Resigns Amid Allegations

Abia State’s suspended Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, has officially resigned from her position. This development was announced on Wednesday by Ukoha Njoku, the spokesperson for Governor Alex Otti.

Background on Suspension

Dr. Okoronkwo’s suspension, ordered by Governor Otti in June, was due to alleged “gross misconduct.” The specifics of the allegations were not disclosed by the governor. The suspension was intended to allow for a thorough investigation into the claims against her, as stated by Okey Kanu, the state’s Commissioner for Information.

Resignation Announcement

In a statement released on Wednesday, Njoku confirmed that Dr. Okoronkwo had submitted her resignation letter, which Governor Otti accepted. The governor expressed gratitude for her contributions over the past year, acknowledging her efforts in improving the health sector.

Governor Otti reiterated his commitment to transforming Abia State, highlighting his authority to make personnel changes to fulfill his promises to the people. He emphasized that his administration remains focused on delivering effective governance.

Pattern of Resignations

Dr. Okoronkwo’s resignation is part of a series of recent exits from the Abia State Government. Last week, two other commissioners, Chima Oriaku (Science and Technology) and Professor Monica Ironkwe (Agriculture), also resigned. The reasons for their departures were not disclosed, though there were speculations about potential sackings that were not independently confirmed.

Additionally, in late June, Governor Otti dismissed his spokesperson, Kazie Uko, though he later indicated Uko had been reassigned to a different role. Shortly thereafter, he removed nearly all permanent secretaries and the head of the Abia State Civil Service.
