Traditional Worshippers Plan Oro Festival to Coincide with #EndBadGovt Protest in Lagos

There are emerging reports that traditional worshippers in Lagos are planning to hold the Oro Festival from August 1 to August 15, a period that coincides with the scheduled #EndBadGovt protest. The timing has raised suspicions about the intentions behind the festival.

A notice that went viral on social media Wednesday alerted residents and visitors about the upcoming festival, stating, “Please be informed that the Oro Festival will be observed in various communities across Lagos from 1st of August to August 15. This traditional Yoruba cultural event involves significant rituals.”

Despite the suspicious timing, the Lagos state government has denied any involvement in the scheduling of the Oro Festival. Gboyega Akosile, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, emphasized that both the protesters and traditional worshippers have the right to conduct their activities.

“I saw it just like every other person did. Did you see any signatory to this statement? The answer is no! If it’s not endorsed, then it’s a nullity. However, traditional religious worshippers have the right to carry out their worship at any time. Whether it coincides with the dates of the protests or not,” Akosile stated in an interview with Peoples Gazette.

Akosile further advised that both groups should ensure they do not interfere with each other to prevent a breakdown of law and order. He warned that if the protests turn violent, security agencies would intervene to maintain peace.

This development recalls similar events before the 2023 general elections in Lagos, where the Oro Festival was declared, leading to the placement of ritual items across the state. It was speculated that this was a strategy to deter voters opposed to the ruling party from participating freely in the elections.

The coinciding dates of the Oro Festival and the #EndBadGovt protest have sparked concerns and debates about the potential for conflict and the implications for public order in Lagos. Residents and visitors are advised to stay informed and exercise caution during this period.
