Peter Obi Officially Registers with ADC, Begins Membership Drive in Awka
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has formally received his membership card of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi collected the card on Saturday at Agulu Ward 2 during the launch of the party’s membership mobilisation, registration and revalidation exercise held in Awka, Anambra State.
Speaking at the event, Obi said political leaders from the South-East were working together within the ADC and engaging with leaders from other regions as part of efforts to build broader national cooperation.
According to him, the party’s membership drive is intended to bring together opposition figures and supporters across political parties in pursuit of a different direction for the country.
He said the goal was to build a country that is more secure and economically stable.
Obi also criticised provisions of the recently amended Electoral Act, arguing that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not determine how political parties choose their candidates. He said the commission’s role should focus on conducting elections rather than regulating internal party processes.
The former governor of Anambra State also criticised the current political climate, saying some leaders who previously described themselves as democrats were now acting in ways that undermine democratic principles.
Obi said discussions about elections should not overshadow governance, pointing to challenges in areas such as electricity and security.
He said the ADC plans to expand its membership ahead of the next general election and described the 2027 vote as a contest against poor leadership.
Obi added that the party aims to mobilise more Nigerians to participate politically, with the goal of addressing poverty and improving security.
The event was attended by the senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, and the senator representing Anambra North, Tony Nwoye.
