Peter Obi Finally Breaks Silence on Trump’s Designation of Nigeria as Country of Concern
Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has finally responded to President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and his warning of possible U.S. military action.
In a statement shared on his official X handle, Obi described the development as deeply worrying and urged Nigerians to take it seriously. He condemned the high level of insecurity across the country, citing reports by Amnesty International indicating that over 10,000 people have been killed since May 2023.
Obi lamented the continuing loss of lives and property, saying the situation could have been avoided with effective governance and capable leadership. He criticised the APC-led administration for what he called incompetence, lack of commitment, and poor resource management, stressing that such failures have worsened insecurity and eroded national unity.
While acknowledging that Nigeria’s security challenges did not begin under the current government, Obi emphasised the urgent need for patriotic and responsible leadership to restore peace and justice.
He also urged both Nigeria and the United States to handle the issue through diplomatic channels, highlighting the longstanding partnership between the two democracies. “The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic and any other plausible engagement by both nations aimed at addressing the prevailing and disturbing security concerns,” he said.
Obi concluded by calling for urgent cooperation between both countries to safeguard peace and stability.
