Amaechi, Peter Obi, Others Hold Strategic Meeting in Abuja on Opposition Unity Ahead of 2027 Election

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday hosted a closed-door meeting in Abuja with the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, alongside other political figures, in a discussion centred on Nigeria’s democratic direction and opposition strategy.

Those present at the meeting included Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central), former Anambra State Governor Achike Udenwa, and Victor Oganku.

According to sources familiar with the gathering, the conversations focused on efforts to consolidate opposition forces and build consensus around emerging political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting comes amid ongoing realignments within the opposition space, particularly around the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has been mentioned in recent discussions involving Amaechi and other political actors, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as a possible platform for future political contests.

Amaechi, who contested the All Progressives Congress presidential primary in 2022 and came second to President Bola Tinubu, has recently spoken publicly about his intention to remain active in the 2027 race.

In a recent interview, he argued against a pre-arranged consensus approach for selecting a presidential candidate within the ADC, insisting that aspirants should compete directly to test their support base.

He also stated that Nigeria’s current challenges require stronger leadership focus on economic conditions and security, while adding that he would support any candidate, including Atiku Abubakar, if such a candidate emerges through a transparent party process.
