PDP Maintains Stance: Former Rivers Lawmakers Have Forfeited Seats, Dismisses Allegations
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its unwavering stance on former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a press statement released today, the party dismissed allegations of pressure to compromise its position in court.
The PDP clarified that it remains resolute in its assertion that the seats of the former Rivers lawmakers became vacant on December 11, 2023, following their public announcement of defection to the APC. The party emphasized that it is not yielding to any external pressures to reverse its decision.
The statement also refuted rumors circulating on social media suggesting that there are plans to provide a pathway for the former lawmakers to reclaim their seats. The PDP reiterated that the affected members have forfeited their positions due to what it termed as an “unpardonable constitutional breach.”
Highlighting its legal action, the PDP’s National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade SAN, outlined the party’s stance in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1681/2023 filed at the Federal High Court Abuja. Among the declarations sought by the party are orders for bye-elections in the constituencies of the former lawmakers and an injunction restraining them from performing legislative duties.
The statement concluded by pointing out numerous judicial precedents supporting the PDP’s position. It was signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the party.
