PDP Faces New Crisis Ahead of Crucial NEC Meeting

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gears up for its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for April 18, 2024, fresh turmoil brews within the party. This turmoil raises concerns about the party’s ability to address anti-party activities effectively.

A coalition of PDP federal lawmakers, led by Hon Ikenga UgoChinyere, has demanded the resignation of the acting national chairman, Umar Iliya Damagun, citing alleged anti-party actions. They accuse Damagun of orchestrating changes in local government leadership to favor APC members, among other grievances. The lawmakers assert that Damagun’s leadership has weakened the party, resulting in electoral losses and legal battles. They vow to sever ties with the leadership if changes are not made.

Meanwhile, divergent views emerge within the party. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar returns to the country, potentially to influence discussions ahead of the NEC meeting. However, minority leader Kingsley Chinda distances himself from calls for Damagun’s resignation, urging against unparliamentary conduct.

The PDP’s struggles trace back to its defeat in the 2015 general elections, compounded by internal conflicts. The absence of cohesive leadership and failure to address anti-party activities further weaken the party’s stance as a viable opposition.

Various party members and analysts weigh in on the situation. Conrad Utaan advocates for new leadership to inject energy into the party, while Senator Gabriel Suswam laments external influences undermining the PDP’s effectiveness.

Former National Auditor of the PDP, Barr Ray Nnaji, stresses the need for concrete evidence to substantiate allegations against Damagun. He anticipates robust discussions at the upcoming NEC meeting but downplays claims of a make-or-break scenario for the party.

As the PDP braces for its NEC meeting, internal rifts and external pressures underscore the challenges facing the party. The outcome of the meeting could determine the party’s trajectory and its ability to regain political relevance in Nigeria’s landscape.
