Northern Elders Express Regret for Backing President Tinubu in 2023 Election
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed remorse over their decision to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election. This revelation comes amidst growing concerns over the leadership direction of the nation.
President Tinubu, who contested under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), garnered the highest number of votes from the Northern region during the 2023 polls.
Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, spokesperson for the forum, emphasized the importance of unity and consensus in selecting future presidential candidates. He stated that the North would prioritize candidates who are perceived as inclusive, less contentious, and more aligned with the collective interests of all Nigerian regions.
Suleiman admitted to the error of supporting Tinubu in 2023 and affirmed the region’s commitment to avoiding similar mistakes in upcoming elections. He stressed the significance of learning from past misjudgments to ensure a candidate capable of uniting the nation and governing in the best interests of all Nigerians.
Meanwhile, criticisms of President Tinubu’s administration have intensified, with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar highlighting perceived shortcomings in government policies, particularly regarding issues like electricity tariff hikes.
Despite the criticisms, President Tinubu has maintained optimism about his administration’s performance, citing recent legislative accomplishments such as the signing of the Student Loan bill into law. He reassured Nigerians that the government was tackling economic challenges and paving the way for a brighter future, especially for the underprivileged segments of society.
