Labour Party Challenges NLC’s Authority to Remove National Working Committee

The Labour Party has vehemently contested the decision made by the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission to dismiss the National Chairman, Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC). The party refuted the authority of the NLC to take such actions.

Following a stakeholders meeting held in Abuja on Monday, the Political Commission announced the removal of the NWC led by Abure and proposed the establishment of a transition committee to oversee the party’s affairs. Additionally, it was decided to assume control of the party’s offices nationwide until a new national convention could be organized within three months.

In response, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, criticized the Political Commission, stating that it lacked the jurisdiction to make such decisions. The party accused the Commission of being a front for the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, alleging his political ambitions for 2027 as the driving force behind the Commission’s actions.

The Labour Party emphasized that the NLC’s intervention was unwarranted, as it lacked constitutional recognition within the party’s framework. The statement highlighted the illegitimacy of the stakeholders’ meeting convened by the NLC, labeling it as an “enterprise in futility.”

Furthermore, the Labour Party underscored the achievements of the Abure-led NWC, citing successful national conventions and notable electoral victories. The party also called attention to the prevailing economic challenges faced by Nigerians under the current administration, criticizing the NLC’s failure to address workers’ rights issues effectively.

In closing, the Labour Party extended an olive branch to genuine party members, urging unity in rebuilding the party. It affirmed its commitment to seeking legal recourse if necessary while calling for calm among its supporters, expressing confidence in the eventual triumph of justice.
