Opposition Figures Atiku, Obi, Others Begin Coalition Talks for 2027 Elections
In the early stages of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, prominent opposition figures have begun discussions for a potential Coalition leading up to the 2027 polls. Key players in this nascent alliance include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido.
The discussions gained momentum following Obi’s unexpected visit to Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), along with meetings with other PDP stalwarts, including former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki and former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido.
While the details of these discussions remain undisclosed, Atiku expressed his gratitude for hosting Obi, signaling a significant step in the alliance formation process. Sources close to Atiku revealed that communication channels had been established between the two leaders, with yesterday’s public meeting representing the culmination of ongoing talks.
The discussions between Atiku and Obi revolve around the possibility of forming an alliance for the 2027 elections, reminiscent of their collaboration during the 2019 elections. However, the choice of political platform for this alliance remains under deliberation, with both leaders prioritizing the nation’s interest over party affiliations.
Atiku and Obi’s previous partnership in the 2019 elections under the PDP banner was disrupted when Obi transitioned to the Labour Party for his presidential bid in 2023. Despite their electoral defeat in 2023, Atiku has persistently advocated for opposition unity to challenge the incumbent All Progressives Congress (APC), while Obi has been expanding his political influence, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
Regarding Obi’s recent meetings with Atiku, Saraki, and Lamido, his spokesperson emphasized their commitment to addressing the nation’s challenges and uplifting all Nigerians, especially the marginalized communities. Additionally, former NERC chairman Dr. Sam Amadi highlighted the mutual respect between Atiku and Obi, suggesting a conducive environment for their collaboration.
Amidst these developments, concerns have been raised within the Labour Party leadership regarding Obi’s engagement in merger talks without formal approval. While the national chairman and publicity secretary of the party remained unavailable for comment, factional chairman Lamidi Apapa stressed the need for party endorsement before finalizing any agreements.
On the other hand, the APC’s response to these discussions is anticipated, with a member of the National Working Committee affirming the party’s readiness to address the situation in due course. As the political landscape evolves with alliance formations and strategic maneuvers, the upcoming 2027 elections promise to be a dynamic and pivotal juncture in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
