Nigerian Military Vows to Annihilate IPOB After Killing of 5 Soldiers: ‘Our Response Will Be Fierce and Overwhelming’
In a stern response to the recent killing of five soldiers in Abia State, the Nigerian military has pledged to deliver a fierce and overwhelming retaliation against the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The incident occurred on Thursday when gunmen enforcing IPOB’s sit-at-home order ambushed soldiers at Obikabia Junction in Obingwa Local Government Area.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, condemned the attack and vowed to avenge the fallen soldiers. “We will bring overwhelming military pressure on the group to ensure their total defeat,” Buba stated.
The sit-at-home order was part of IPOB’s commemoration of Biafra Heroes Day, marking the deaths of Igbo people during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970. However, the military has accused IPOB and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), of exploiting the occasion to perpetrate violence.
The soldiers were attacked by terrorists using three tinted Prado Toyota SUVs and other vehicles. Buba explained that the troops were at the checkpoint to maintain peace and protect citizens when they were unexpectedly attacked.
The military is mourning the loss of its personnel, with Buba expressing deep regret over the incident. He emphasized the importance of public support in combating terrorism, noting that IPOB’s ability to capitalize on local support posed a significant challenge.
An investigation into the attack has been launched, and Buba assured that the military’s response would be decisive. “Winning the war without the support of the people is close to impossible. Accordingly, it is absolutely imperative that the military retaliate against this dastardly act against troops,” he declared.
