Labour Unrest in Abia: NLC Slams Gov. Otti Over Unpaid Salaries
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abia State has taken a firm stance against Governor Alex Otti regarding the prolonged delay in salary payments and the implementation of a new workers’ verification process.
In a circular dated May 11th, signed by the state chairman, Okoro Ogbonnaya, and state secretary, Emma Alozie, the NLC instructed state workers to refrain from participating in the verification process until concerns are addressed.
The circular highlighted the frustration among workers who have endured over seven months without pay, citing unresolved issues from previous verification exercises.
The directive contradicts an earlier statement from the Abia State Head of Service, urging workers to undergo online verification from May 10th to May 31st, 2024.
The NLC criticized the government’s decision to initiate another verification process, labeling it as insensitive and detrimental to workers already grappling with financial hardships.
Expressing disappointment, the NLC emphasized the lack of consultation with labor leaders, branding the move as retrogressive and anti-worker.
Governor Otti’s administration faces mounting pressure to address the grievances of workers and prioritize their welfare amidst ongoing economic challenges.
