Kano Residents Defiant in Face of Police Warning as Fresh Protests Erupt Over Governor’s Removal

Protests have erupted on the streets of Kano in response to the recent Appeal Court decision to uphold the tribunal’s verdict that ousted Governor Abba Yusuf. The tribunal, led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, had initially nullified 165,663 votes for Yusuf, citing lack of signatures or stamps from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This led to a reduction in Yusuf’s votes to 853,939, while his All Progressives Congress (APC) rival, Nasir Ganuwa, maintained 890,705 votes.

Governor Yusuf, contesting under the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), contested the tribunal’s decision, deeming it “unfair” and a “miscarriage of justice.” However, the Appeal Court, in a recent judgment, ruled in favor of Yusuf’s opponent, further intensifying tensions in Kano.

Despite initial attempts by security operatives to prevent protests, demonstrators took to the streets, expressing their dissatisfaction with chants such as “We will not accept it,” “Kano belongs to Abba,” and “Our mandate must be restored.” Security forces attempted to disperse the protesters, but they persisted, regrouping and standing firm.

The Police have issued a warning to Kano residents, advising against public processions or protests, particularly in response to the Appeal Court judgment. The situation remains tense as citizens continue to voice their discontent over the recent political developments.
