NSCDC Officers Face Detention After Shooting Students During Exam in Abuja

In a shocking incident on Wednesday, three personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were arrested by the Nigeria Police for allegedly shooting two students at Senior Secondary School, Life Camp. The unfortunate event took place within the Jabi and Gwarinpa areas of the Federal Capital Territory.

According to reports, the two wounded students are currently undergoing treatment at Gwarinpa Hospital. The incident transpired around 11:20 am during an ongoing examination at the school premises, where NSCDC personnel were deployed to provide security.

In response to the shooting, enraged high school students took to the streets, vandalizing three patrol vehicles owned by the NSCDC in protest against the attack on their fellow students.

FCT Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident, assuring that the police swiftly intervened to restore order. She stated, “The incident happened, but our operatives intervened in time to restore law and order, and the environment is now peaceful. Two injured students are currently receiving treatment, and the CP, Haruna Garba, has ordered the commencement of an investigation into the incident.”

Despite these developments, the FCT Command of the NSCDC has remained silent on the matter. Comfort Okomanyi, the spokesperson for the FCT NSCDC, cited being indisposed when contacted for comments. However, she assured, “I’ll reach out to the command for an update on the matter, and I’ll get back to you.”

As the investigation unfolds, concerns mount over the actions of the NSCDC officers and the repercussions of this incident on the relationship between security forces and the public.
