31 Nabbed as EFCC Dismantles Suspected ‘Yahoo Academy’ in FCT

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have dismantled a suspected internet fraud training centre, commonly referred to as a “Yahoo academy,” in Abuja, arresting 31 individuals during a raid on Thursday.

The operation took place at Becki Estate in Karu, within the Federal Capital Territory, where authorities said the suspects were undergoing structured training in cybercrime activities.

According to the commission, those arrested include two suspected ringleaders believed to be in charge of the facility, as well as several recruits described as trainees who were found participating in ongoing fraud lessons at the time of the raid.

Items recovered from the location include multiple mobile phones, 18 laptops and other electronic devices believed to have been used in fraudulent operations.

Preliminary findings by the EFCC indicate that some of the recruits were brought in from Benue State under the pretense of legitimate employment. Upon arrival, however, they were allegedly confined and compelled to take part in cybercrime training.

Investigators said the operators of the centre maintained strict control over the recruits, including restricting their movement and confiscating personal communication devices to prevent outside contact.

The commission also reported allegations of abuse within the facility, stating that some trainees were subjected to physical punishment for non-compliance.

The EFCC said all suspects will be charged to court after investigations are completed, adding that efforts are ongoing to identify and dismantle similar operations across the country.
