Final Warning: Lagos Authorities Signal Intent to Demolish Marked Structures After Monday
In a decisive move to address the persistent issue of flooding, the Lagos State Government has signaled its intent to demolish illegal structures encroaching on drainage systems in various areas. The affected locations include Orchid Road, Agungi, Ajiran, Conservation Road, Osapa, and Oral Estate II along the Ikota River.
The impending action comes in the wake of a seven-day contravention notice served on property owners whose structures violate the mandated seven-meter drainage setback. Kunle Adesina, the Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, conveyed this information during a telephone interview on Tuesday.
Adesina clarified that, as per state law, the removal of any building within the specified drainage setback is permissible once the seven-day notice has lapsed. The authority to approve demolition or extend the deadline rests solely with the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
The commissioner, after an inspection tour on Sunday, emphasized through his official handle, @Tokunbo_Wahab, that blaming the government for flooding is unwarranted when residents and developers violate regulations. He underscored the government’s commitment to enforcing the law and reclaiming drainage setbacks to mitigate flooding risks.
As the Monday deadline approaches, the fate of the structures remains uncertain, pending Commissioner Wahab’s decision on whether to grant an extension or proceed with demolitions. Lagosians are urged to adhere to the State Drainage Master Plan to avoid property demolition, as the government stands firm on its commitment to enforcing the law.
