Japa: Reps Express Concerns as LUTH Closes Wards Amidst Doctor Shortage

The House of Representatives Committee on Health has raised alarm over the diminishing health manpower in Nigeria. The committee revealed that the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), the nation’s premier health training institution, has been forced to close five wards, amounting to 150 beds, due to a shortage of doctors and nurses.

Chairman of the committee, Dr. Amos Magaji, expressed deep concern about the situation, emphasizing the need to address the increasing trend of Nigerian health professionals relocating abroad for better opportunities. Dr. Magaji highlighted the adverse impact of this migration on the country’s healthcare system and pledged legislative efforts to curb the “japa syndrome.”

During an oversight visit to LUTH in Idi-Araba, Dr. Magaji stated, “Nigeria finds itself in a precarious moment, especially in the healthcare system where ‘japa’ has taken center stage.” He outlined the committee’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and LUTH to tackle the challenges, emphasizing a comprehensive approach to solving the issue.

Acknowledging that the problem requires both immediate and long-term solutions, Dr. Magaji explained, “We are looking at how to solve this problem, starting from university enrollment, house officers’ employment, and the residency program.”

Meanwhile, Chief Medical Director of LUTH, Professor Wasiu Adeyemo, informed lawmakers that the hospital’s cancer center has treated over 9,600 patients since its commissioning in 2019. He commended the federal government and the House of Representatives for their support in providing quality healthcare for Nigerians, urging citizens to patronize the facility.

As the nation struggles with the challenges posed by the “japa syndrome,” the committee vows to address the issue systematically, recognizing the importance of sustaining a robust healthcare system for the well-being of all Nigerians.
