JUST IN: Nigerian Army General Jailed for Embezzling NAPL Funds

Major General Umar Mohammed, the former Group Managing Director of Nigerian Army Properties Limited (NAPL), has been convicted of embezzlement charges by a Nigerian Army Special Court-martial in Abuja. The court’s decision was delivered on Tuesday, marking a turning point in a complex legal battle.

Mohammed faced an 18-count charge that encompassed allegations of forgery, misappropriation of funds, and conspiracy, among other offenses. Initially, he had pleaded not guilty to all the charges levied against him.

However, during the recent court session presided over by an eight-member panel led by Major General James Myam, the senior military officer was found guilty of 14 out of the 18 charges. Notably, the first count was brought under section 383(1) of the Criminal Code Act Cap c38 law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and was punishable under section 390(7). Additionally, this charge was also brought pursuant to section 114 of the Armed Forces Act Cap A20 2004.

The court proceedings saw the prosecution present 24 witnesses, while the defendant called upon two witnesses in his defense. Following deliberations, the panel issued a sentence of 5 years for some offenses, 7 years for others, and 2 years for additional charges. Importantly, these sentences are to run concurrently.

Furthermore, the court ordered Major General Mohammed to refund embezzled funds to NAPL. It is important to note that these sentences are subject to confirmation by the appropriate confirming authority.

Before this ruling, Major General Umar Mohammed had spent over two years in detention at the Nigerian Army’s Mogadishu cantonment facility in Abuja. This verdict serves as a reminder of the commitment to justice within the Nigerian military and highlights the consequences of financial misconduct within the armed forces.
