JUST IN: I Stand by the Party Constitution” – Gov Adeleke Backs PDP Governors’ Forum on Damagum’s Exit
The leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken a new turn, as Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has refuted claims made by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State regarding his stance on the party’s chairmanship issue.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke clarified his position, declaring that he fully supports the provisions of the PDP constitution concerning leadership succession.
“I stand by the Constitution of our great party, which clearly spells out the succession procedure in case of the exit of an elected chairman,” Adeleke said, reaffirming his commitment to the party’s internal rules.
This statement comes after Governor Makinde, during a visit from Acting PDP Chairman Umar Damagum and members of the National Working Committee (NWC), claimed that both he and Adeleke were “100% in support” of Damagum’s leadership. Makinde had also pledged full backing for any decisions Damagum might take to reposition the party.
However, Governor Adeleke’s clarification highlights his alignment with the PDP Governors’ Forum resolution, not necessarily an endorsement of Damagum as a permanent leader. “I also stand by the resolution of the PDP Governors’ Forum, of which I am an integral part,” Adeleke stated.
Adeleke emphasized the need for the party to strictly adhere to its constitution to maintain order during this critical period. “Our party must adhere to its Constitution at this critical time and at all times. That is the way to build a responsible political party,” he added.
