JUST IN: Federal High Court Judge Sentences Bobrisky to 6 Months Behind Bars

Controversial figure Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, famously known as Bobrisky, has been handed a six-month prison sentence without the possibility of a fine for the abuse of the Nigerian currency, the naira.

The verdict was delivered by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Lagos, who emphasized that the ruling aimed to deter others from similar acts of naira abuse and mutilation.

Before the sentencing, the court questioned Bobrisky about his gender identity, to which he promptly asserted his identity as male. Consequently, he was ordered to serve his term at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, with the sentence retroactively starting from March 24, 2024, the day of his arrest.

Bobrisky’s conviction stemmed from his guilty plea to four counts of naira abuse brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges detailed instances where he allegedly tampered with various sums of money issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria during social events.

The judge adjourned the case for sentencing, originally scheduled for last Thursday, due to the Eid-El-Fitri holiday declared by the Federal Government. The counts against Bobrisky outlined incidents dating back to 2022 and spanned various locations in Lagos, where he allegedly sprayed money during social gatherings, contravening the Central Bank Act of 2007.
