JUST IN: Court Stops PDP National Convention, Gives Reasons
The Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its planned national convention slated for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a ruling delivered by Justice James Omotosho, the court upheld a suit filed by three aggrieved members of the PDP, who argued that the party breached key provisions of its constitution, the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Justice Omotosho held that the evidence before the court proved that the PDP failed to conduct valid state congresses before scheduling the convention to elect new national officers. He described the party’s actions as a clear violation of its internal processes and statutory obligations.
The court, therefore, ordered the PDP to “put its house in order” and issue the mandatory 21-day notice to INEC before proceeding with any national convention.
The plaintiffs—Hon. Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP Chairman), Hon. Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia PDP Chairman), and Turnah Alabh George (PDP Secretary, South-South)—filed the case marked *FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025*.
Defendants in the suit included INEC, the PDP, its National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, national officers Ali Odefa and Emmanuel Ogidi, as well as the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC).
The court also dismissed preliminary objections filed by the defendants, who argued that the dispute was an internal party matter beyond judicial intervention.
